Here is my second portrait of Elena. The first was naturalistic; this one features wildly exaggerated color.
The name means simply “woman” in the Tahitian language. Why a Tahitian title? Because the picture owes a lot, from a standpoint of color and style, to Paul Gauguin. Expecting to influence artists of future generations, Gauguin expressed a hope that those artists would recognize their indebtedness to him.
So there’s your tribute, sir. Personally you were a bit of a rat—but that part is dead, and only the good stuff remains.
